Pala Dynasty

Pala Dynasty
The ruling chiefs of Bengal, who were for a long time prey to intrusions by powers located in the Gangetic Doab (Kanauj) and Kamrupa (Assam), elected in 765 a certain Gopala as their king. The dynasty founded by Gopala came to be called the Palas, who ruled until the beginning of the 12th century. The dynasty collapsed after Mahipala (988-1038). A much diminished Pala chieftainship continued to survive even after the rise of the Senas (1095) but was extinguished after Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar's inva-sion (1204). Under the patronage of the Palas, Buddhism continued to survive in Bengal until the end of 12th century at a time when it was disappearing from other parts of the subcontinent under the on-slaught of revived Brahmanical faith.
